On my Bookish BS

Hello there, nice to meet you, I am the writer of this BS. I am a 40 something, cis, bisexual, married female. I am a data analyst and former English major with too much time on her hands and a love of all things bookish.  I am in my romance, romantasy, smutty book era and I am loving it.  I'm doing my best to read more indie, queer, and minority authors. As much as I love SJM and Rebecca Yarros I know there's a whole world outside of that delicious mainstream bubble so ... yeah.  Some posts may be about just how incredible an author is. Some posts may be about tropes and themes that are awesome or really grind my gears. All posts will be book adjacent but may not be about just one book. Again, I am here for the vibes, I am on my bookish BS after all.  Hang out, meet some new authors, support them by reading something new with me, and enjoy. Or don't. This is really about me having an outlet. Cool? Cool.

Vow to Hate You - Kay Riley

Image
A sexy, yet serious, billionaire husband, a bratty, rebellious wife, a marriage of convenience, the world's most WASPy parents, several years of distance, and a second chance to make things right?  Sure. Absolutely. Give me more. Vow to Hate You by Kay Riley does all of that and more in this sexy, angry complex book.  We get a very sexy Magic Mike-esque secret club which is DELICIOUS!  Questionable business contacts. There’s maybe corporate espionage? So very dramatic!  Lots and lots of romantic and sexual tension. SO DROOL WORTHY!  Delicious banter. I CACKLED!  So much family drama. Like - these people are kind of the worst which lends itself to juicy AF drama.  Secrets and deception that kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen next.  I loved these characters they were so much more than just a billionaire and a brat and I loved some of the more complicated aspects of their characters that made them the ...

On Three ... Baby Reed - Katelyn Snyder

Image
I got to read the first book in the Scoring with Love series as an ARC and I was lucky enough to get to again read early it's sequel On Three ... Baby Reed.  and honestly, Katelyn Snyder has become one of my favorite contemporary authors.  Tatum Reed and Darcy Whitestone give in to one night of passion and wind up with a lifetime of commitment in the form of an unexpected bundle of joy. We get to go along with them on a super fun and complex journey from playboy and career focused woman to one happy family. Katelyn Snyder is fantastic at writing cute and funny banter, delicious spice, and the emotional and physical toll of pregnancy and the postpartum experience on both momma and daddy. It's an incredible journey from one night stand to HEA and honestly - these two were headed there from their first meeting in Shot to the Hart. This made me laugh, it made me cry, and I loved the positive representation of taking care of your mental health for both men and women when there ar...

Masks and Mishaps - Rebecca Kinkade

Image
Releasing this week, Masks and Mishaps is the third and final installment of the Streams and Schemes trilogy by Rebecca Kinkade and I am not prepared!  In the Trilogy of Streams and Schemes each book has been increasingly sexy and intense. I was absolutely blown away by how much I fell in love with Dalton and Essie though. Dalton is the most buttoned up, controlled investment banker by day and the most chaotic, foul mouthed, sexy BAMF after hours. Essie? Her brilliant freaking brain! CompSci girl in investment banking by day and queen CamGirl and CamGirl analytics by night? SAY FREAKING LESS. I love everything about these two and their chemistry is so flipping off the charts it makes me so hot my teeth sweat. Dalton looks at Essie like she hangs the stars and everyone else like they touch her and he will burn their houses down. Like all Rebecca Kinkade books you get all the best banter, competency kink, brilliant freaking people being both brilliant and kinky AF, and some of the m...

Our Vicious Oaths - N.E. Davenport

Image
I love me some fantasy/romantasy but I was utterly unprepared for the world created by N.E. Davenport in Our Vicious Oaths.  Malachi and Kadeesha are two of the best written MCs I have come across in a fantasy in a while. He is devious, deadly, and DELICIOUS in the best of ways. She is cunning, caring, and freaking brilliant and also FREAKING DELICIOUS. The two of them together? I have no words.  The complexity of their relationships, to each other, to their families, to their friends, to the courts which they serve, to the wider universe in which they exist is just mind blowing. Davenport did an incredible job creating this all-encompassing world that I just wanted to get lost in. I wanted to know more about every single character; there were relationships growing and changing in the wings that I wanted to know more about. The main story line was so satisfying, each twist and turn made me go OH! YES! OOOO I didn't see that coming! OF COURSE! I just loved the ride, and the pay...

Tales of the Scorned - A Charity Anthology

Image
As an ARC reader for volumes 1,3, and 4 of this charity anthology , I was absolutely blown away by the bench depth of the authors involved in this project. Some of the authors I was very familiar with, and some were brand new names to me and I fear my TBR has grown exponentially due to the number of new authors I have been introduced to. Every story hit me with how each author interpreted the task at hand and I felt rage, hope, despair, joy, fear, and despair in equal measure and I read through these stories. It was a whole dang ride. Some of the standout stories to me include: Karma, Madi Danielle - Sometimes the most dangerous thing is a pretty face Southern Discomfort, Aurora Graves - In the south revenge is a dish best served with a glass of sweet tea and a smile but try telling that to these ladies. Lucky Number 19, Alina May - A purveyor of snide talking medical malpractice gets what's coming to them The Bloom After Ruin, Maree Rose - Using art to heal from trauma and delicio...

Heartless Game - Jo Brenner

Image
You know I love hockey romance. You know I love mafia romance. You know I love bully romance. So this was pretty much a guaranteed 5 star read for me.  Enter Heartless Game by Jo Brenner. Isaac and Tovah are a match made in well.. not heaven that's for sure.  So many secrets. His. Hers. Theirs. Shared history - known and unknown. Family secrets. Sexual tension that absolutely cannot be denied. Oh ... and maybe some mafia stuff for flavor? There is absolutely so much to love about this story that is INSANE that it is packed in to one volume. Honestly, it's a steal. It's like two stories for the price of one. You get sexy, college hockey dark romance on one hand and crazy mafia thriller on the other.  Brenner also manages to splice in some phenomenal prose, the best dark humor (literally, THE BEST) and interpersonal relationships into this story. I cannot wait to find out what's up with Lawson, and Judah, and Levi down the road because really... those boys got secrets an...

Deep End - Ali Hazelwood

Image
Yes, I am easily swayed and after all the back and forth on BookTok/Bookstagram/BookThreads I had to know whether Deep End by Ali Hazelwood was really THAT spicy or not.  Personally? Not the spiciest thing I've ever read but I LOVED it. Lukas is top tier book boyfriend material and I absolutely love him.  What made this book so good to me was the way it addressed trauma and healing and the importance of trust and connection in terms of sexual relationships. It was really well done. It was sexy. It was just a good read.  I'm a fan.  Now I have a ton more books to read which my poor TBR just cannot handle. Excuse me while I drown in books.
